B.S. in Psychology

Description

The B.S. in psychology provides students with a solid foundation for graduate programs as well as for careers in which an understanding of human behavior and psychological research is beneficial. Students learn the scientific approach to the study of human and animal behavior, engage in experiential learning, gain an understanding of cultural perspectives, and practice using statistical tools. Students take courses in a variety of subfields, such as social, cognitive, personality, abnormal, developmental, behavior analysis, and behavioral neuroscience.

Course Requirements

A major in psychology for the B.S. degree consists of 39 credit hours, including Psy 201, 202, 205, 303; at least five of the following six core courses (Psy 301, 309, 311, 319, 320, 321); at least one of the following cultural perspectives courses (Psy 340, 350, 365, 425, 565); at least one of the following experiential learning research courses (Psy 390, 392, 394, 405, 406, 420, 421, 422), one of the following capstone courses (Psy 340, 360, 365, 390, 392, 394, 396, 410, 415, 417, 419, 430, 451, 456, 457, 470, 475, 565); and additional psychology courses to reach 39 hours. No more than 6 combined credit hours from Psy 401, 402, 403, 405, 406, 420, and/or 421 may be counted toward the major.

The same course can satisfy both the cultural perspectives and capstone requirements. Students must still meet the total number of hours required for the major.

Other Academic Requirements

Students must achieve a grade of C or better in all course work counted for the major in psychology. Psychology courses require a grade of C or better in all prerequisite courses, including those prerequisite courses from other departments.

As part of their general education requirements students must complete 3 credits of Math not including Math 245 or 246. They also complete 18 hours of related course work from the following departments: Computer Science, Biology, Economics, Math, Philosophy, and Sociology.

Emphasis - Behavior Analysis

Description

The undergraduate psychology major with an emphasis in behavior analysis provides students with a strong foundation in both general psychology and specialized behavior-analytic training. This curriculum aligns with the requirements for certification as a Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA), equipping students with skills to engage in clinical practice in settings such as schools, centers, and communities.

Course Requirements

An optional emphasis in behavior analysis consists of the following 21 hours of psychology courses: Psy 309, Psy 323, Psy 313, Psy 328, Psy 423, Psy 408 or Psy 506, and Psy 530.

Other Academic Requirements

Courses can satisfy both the major in psychology and the emphasis in behavior analysis. Students completing the B.S. in psychology and the emphasis in behavior analysis will need to complete 45 hours of psychology.

6 hrs literature survey 6 Complete 6 hours of literature survey with a passing grade. Choose from the following courses: Eng 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, or Eng 226.
6 hrs modern/ancient language 200+ 6 Successfully complete at least 6 hours at the 200 level or above in one modern or ancient language.
6 hrs social science 6 Successfully complete 6 semester hours in anthropology, economics, political science, psychology, or sociology.
6 hrs social science/humanities 6 Complete 6 hours of additional social science or humanities coursework. The courses may be chosen from African American studies, anthropology, classical civilization, economics, gender studies, history, Liba 202, philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies, Rhet 201,sociology, and Southern studies.
6 hrs science 6 Successfully complete 2 courses of laboratory science.
2 science labs 8 Successfully complete at least two science laboratory courses.
