M.A.T. in Elementary Teaching

Description

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Elementary Education program is designed for non-education majors (those who hold bachelor’s degrees in areas other than education) who wish to gain teacher licensure in Mississippi (K-6) and a master’s degree concurrently.

Course Requirements

Program Admission Requirements: 1. Bachelor’s degree from a regionally/nationally accredited institution of higher learning 2. Twenty-one (21) ACT (or SAT equivalent) OR achieve a qualifying passing score on the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators examination OR verification of 3.0 overall GPA on a baccalaureate transcript or on last 60 hours of undergraduate work. 3. Passing score on the Praxis Subject Assessment for Elementary (4-6) (Praxis II 5018)

Other Academic Requirements

*Requirements for obtaining the three-year alternate route license (4-6) from MDE:

  1. Complete program admission requirements above.
  2. Complete nine (9) semester hours pre-teaching course requirements (EDCI 613, EDCI 615, EDSP 601).
  3. Earn a Passing score on the Foundations of Reading exam.
  4. Have a valid social security number and provide the Mississippi Department of Education with proof of lawful presence in the US.

**Requirements for obtaining the five-year alternate route license (K-6) from MDE: 1. Meet Three-year Alternate Route requirements above. 2. Obtain a full-time teaching job in a MS public school as teacher of record. 3. Complete all remaining required coursework for the MAT Elementary Education Program.
