Description

The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree program in hospitality management (NHM) at the University of Mississippi is designed to train and mentor students to become proficient teachers and researchers. The program consists of 60 postbaccalaureate credit hours. Course requirements include 18 hours of core courses, 15 hours of directed electives in hospitality management, 9 hours of supporting electives within or outside of the departmental offerings, 18 hours of dissertation, and zero-hour graduate seminars.

Course Requirements

Core Course Requirement (18 hrs.):

NHM 701—Graduate Seminar (1 hr. X 3 times) will be revised to zero hour. Program students must attend the Graduate Seminar each semester they are enrolled in the degree program.
NHM 740 – Consumer Behavior in the Hospitality Industry (3 hrs.)
NHM 741 – Strategic Management in the Hospitality and Service Industry (3 hrs.)

Directed Electives in Hospitality Management (15 hrs.):

All electives are oriented to the hospitality and service industries. Students will select five 3-hr. courses from among 13 graduate-level elective offerings in NHM. Courses will be determined by the student and their doctoral committee.

Supporting Electives (9 hrs.):

Students will select three 3-hr. courses either within the NHM graduate-level offerings or graduate courses in other departments as determined by the student and their doctoral committee. Courses are intended to complement the directed electives selected by the student and the student’s committee.

Graduate Seminar (0 hr.):

Students are required to attend the graduate seminars throughout their degree program.

Other Academic Requirements

After completing all course work, students must sit for a written comprehensive exam before proceeding to dissertation hours. Upon successful completion of the comprehensive exam, all students will be required to complete 18 hours of dissertation (NHM 797).
