UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

General Studies

Admission Policies

Students applying for admission to the B.M.D.S. or B.U.S. degree will have met the same requirements as those for general admission to the University and will have completed a supplemental application to the degree program.

Total Hours Required

At least 120 semester hours with passing grades must be completed for the Bachelor of Multi-Disciplinary Studies and the Bachelor of University Studies degrees.

Advanced Work Requirement

At least 30 of the semester hours applied to the B.M.D.S. or B.U.S. degree program must be completed at the 300, 400, or 500 level.

General Education Core Curriculum

Listed in the table below are the general education courses that are required for the Bachelor of Multi-Disciplinary Studies degree program and the Bachelor of University Studies degree program.

*The Bachelor of Multi-Disciplinary Studies degree requires two sciences with labs; the Bachelor of University Studies degree requires two science lecture courses.

First Year Composition

The requirement consists of 6 hours of first year composition. The standard composition sequence consists of 1) either Writ 100 or Writ 101 or HON 101 and 2) either Writ 102 or Liberal Arts (Liba) 102 or HON 102.

Science

Two courses may be chosen from astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, Liba 205, 205L, 150, 151, 315, 315L and physics. For students in Multi-Disciplinary Studies, each of the courses taken must include laboratories (only science lecture courses are required for students in University Studies).

Note: A student may not receive credit for taking Astr 101 or 102 with either Astr 103 or 104 nor can a student receive credit for taking BISC 102 and 160, BISC 103 and 161, BISC 104 and 162, BISC 105 and 163. GEOL 104 cannot be counted if GEOL 101 is counted, and GEOL 106 cannot be counted if GEOL 102 is counted.

Mathematics - 3 hours

Courses that meet the mathematics requirement are mathematics courses at the 100-level or above except for Math 245 and Math 246.

After completing Math 261 with a C or higher, students may not receive credit for Math 121, Math 125, or Math 267. After completing Math 262 with a C or higher, students may not receive credit for Math 121, 125, or 268.

Social Science - 6 hours

Courses may be chosen from anthropology (ANTH), economics (ECON), political science (POL), psychology (PSY), sociology (SOC), and Liba 203, 313; or HON 101, 102 (if not being used to fulfill composition requirements).

Humanities - 6 hours

The course may be chosen from African American studies (AAS 201, 202); classical civilization (CLC); environmental studies (ENVS 101); gender studies (G ST 201, 202); history (HST); LIBA 202, 312, 305; literature (ENG 103, 220-226); philosophy (PHIL); religion (REL); Southern studies 100-level; or HON 101, 102 (if not being used to fulfill composition requirements).

Fine Or Performing Arts - 3 hours

The course may be chosen from art history, music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot be used to satisfy this requirement. Courses that satisfy this requirement are any Art History (AH); Liba 130, 204, 314; Mus 101, 102, 103, 104, 105; Danc 200; Thea 201, 202. Students who have completed 30 semester hours of undergraduate course work may fulfill the requirement with a 300- or 400-level art history course.

Total Grade Points

A student must attain an overall and resident 2.00 grade-point average on all course work taken at the postsecondary level to attain the Bachelor of Multi-Disciplinary Studies and Bachelor of University Studies degree.

Exercise and Leisure Activity Courses

While exercise and leisure activity (EL) courses are not required, a maximum of 6 hours of these courses may be counted toward a B.M.D.S. degree. These courses are taken only on a pass-fail grading basis.

Admission Policies

Students applying for admission to the BGS degree will have met the same requirements as those for general admission to the University, will have successfully completed a minimum of 30 semester hours of academic course work with a cumulative grade point average of 2.00, and will have selected, with the assistance of a BGS adviser, a combination of three minors that constitute a cohesive academic program
