B.F.A. in Art
Description
Students seeking professional portfolios will pursue the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (B.F.A.). This degree allows for a concentration in fine art, with areas of emphasis in ceramics, painting, and sculpture; or a concentration in expanded media arts, with areas of emphasis in printmaking and imaging arts as well as graphic design. The program permits the student to take a greater number of classes in studio art and art history.
Entrance to the B.F.A.: Students can choose to enter the B.F.A. Studio Art program during the regular UM admissions process. After completing the foundation core and having a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and 2.5 GPA in all art and art history courses, B.F.A. students participate in the B.F.A. Foundations Review to stay in the B.F.A. degree.

*English Literature Survey. The literature survey courses that satisfy this requirement are 6 hours of Eng 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, and 22x. (Eng 103, 199, and 299 do not satisfy this requirement.) Eng courses at the 300, 400, or 500 level may not be used to satisfy this requirement.

- Any AH at the 300 level or higher (6 hours). Students in the fine art concentration are encouraged to take AH 355 and 357. Students in the expanded media arts concentration are encouraged to select from AH 357, 374, or 376.
Other Academic Requirements
B.F.A. Foundations Review: After completing the foundation core and having a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and 2.5 GPA in all art and art history courses, B.F.A. students participate in the B.F.A. Foundations Review. Each student has two chances to submit materials for the B.F.A. Foundations Review. Students who successfully pass the B.F.A. Foundations Review declare their desired concentration in either fine art or expanded media arts, and their desired emphasis area. If the student does not pass the B.F.A. Foundations Review after the second chance, they are not eligible to pursue the B.F.A. degree, and will switch to the B.A. in studio art.
Beginning the semester after the B.F.A. Foundations Review, all B.F.A. students are required to participate in the B.F.A. Forum every semester until enrolling in Art 405 (Pre-thesis Forum) during the semester preceding their thesis exhibition.
During the next (and last) semester, B.F.A. students are required to enroll in Art 491 (Thesis).
Students must maintain a cumulative 2.0 GPA and a 2.5 GPA in all art and art history courses to continue their enrollment in the B.F.A. degree.
