The Schools of Nursing and Pharmacy operate on both the Oxford and Jackson campuses. The Schools of Dentistry, Health Related Professionals and Medicine, and the Health Sciences Graduate School, are based in Jackson only. (Additional healthcare programs are available through the School of Applied Sciences on the Oxford campus.) Other than these exceptions, the schools above are on the Oxford campus.

Emphasis - Sculpture

B.F.A. in Art

Description

Students seeking professional portfolios will pursue the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (B.F.A.). This degree allows for a special emphasis in a particular field such as ceramics, painting, printmaking, graphic design, imaging arts, or sculpture. The program permits the candidate to take a greater number of classes in studio art and art history. Entrance into the B.F.A. program is by application and competitive review. All B.F.A. candidates must pass a portfolio entrance review (the B.F.A. interview) after completing at least 18 and no more than 27 semester hours of art.

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 120

General Education Requirements

General education requirements for the B.F.A. in art include the following:

Fine arts other than visual arts (chosen from Mus 101, 102, 103, 104, 105; Liba 130, 204; Danc 200; or Thea 201, 202) 3

*English Literature Survey. The literature survey courses that satisfy this requirement are 6 hours of Eng 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 225, 226, and 22x. (Eng 103, 199, and 299 do not satisfy this requirement.) Eng courses at the 300, 400, or 500 level may not be used to satisfy this requirement.

**In addition, gender studies courses that are cross-listed with African American studies, classics, English, modern languages, philosophy, or religious studies courses will satisfy this requirement.

Requirements for the B.F.A. include the following:

Advanced studio, 300- and 400-level courses (at least 12 hours must be in one studio area) 15

Electives to bring the total number of hours to 120.

Other Academic Requirements

Beginning the semester after admittance to the B.F.A. program, all B.F.A. students are required to participate in the B.F.A. Forum every semester until enrolling in Art 405 (Pre-thesis Forum) during the semester preceding their thesis exhibition.

During the next (and last) semester, B.F.A. students are required to enroll in Art 491 (Thesis).

Grades in Department of Art courses of less than C (2.0) will not be counted toward this degree.

3 hrs fine & perform arts 3 Complete 3 hours in the area of fine or performing arts. Choose from music, dance, and theatre arts. Studio and workshop courses cannot beused to satisfy this requirement. Acceptable freshman or sophommore-level courses are: Music 101, Music 102, Music 103, Music 104, Music 105; Liba 130; Dance 200; and Theatre 201, 202.
3 hrs humanities 3 Successfully complete 3 hours in one of the following areas: African American Studies; classical civilization; environmental studies 101; gender studies (G St 201, 202, 301, 304, 333, 350, 353, 391, 402); philosophy; religion; or Southern Studies (Any 100 level). In addition, gender studies courses that are cross-listed with African American studies, classical civilization, English, modern languages, philosophy, or religion courses will satisfy this requirement.
3 hrs math 100+ 3 Successfully complete 3 hours of Math at the 100 level or above except for Math 245 and Math 246.
3 hrs history 3 Complete 3 hours in History (HIS) coursework with a passing grade.
6 hrs literature survey 6 Complete 6 hours of literature survey with a passing grade. Choose from the following courses: Eng 220, Eng 221, Eng 222, Eng 223, Eng 224, Eng 225, or Eng 226.
3 hrs social science 3 Successfully complete 3 semester hours in anthropology, economics, political science, psychology or sociology.
6-8 hrs science 6 Complete 6-8 hours of natural science courses with labs from the following areas: biology, chemistry, geology, physics, or astronomy.
