Emphasis - Applied Linguistics and TESOL

M.A. in Modern Languages

The Department of Modern Languages offers the M.A. in modern languages with emphases in French, German, linguistics, Spanish, and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

Minimum Total Credit Hours: 36

Course Requirements

Students must satisfy the requirements for either the emphasis in French, German, Spanish, or TESOL.

Emphasis - Applied Linguistics and TESOL

Description

Students who specialize in TESL learn best practices in the teaching of English as a second language, training, most importantly, for careers as English-language teachers. With its heavy focus on applied and theoretical linguistics, the TESL specialization within the Modern Languages master's program also prepares its graduates for doctoral work in the discipline.

Course Requirements

Four options for completing the degree are available, all of which require 36 credit hours. The four options are as follows:

  • 36 hours of course work in TESL.
  • 24 hours of course work in TESL (minimum) and between 6-12 hours of course work in a departmentally approved subfield.
  • 24 hours of course work in TESL (minimum) and between 6-12 hours of thesis work.
  • 18 hours of course work in TESL and 18 hours of a supervised internship and practicum.

Twelve (12) of the 36 credit hours must consist of courses in the following CORE areas:

  • METHODS: TESL 542 or TESL 672
  • LINGUISTICS: Ling 501, TESL 592, or TESL 600
  • MULTILINGUAL DEVELOPMENT: TESL 535 or TESL 695
  • SOCIOLINGUISTICS: TESL 547, TESL 552, or TESL 620
  • PRACTICUM: TESL 645
  • LANGUAGE TEACHER RESEARCH; TESL 646

Students who elect to pursue the thesis option are additionally required to take TESL 694. Students who elect to complete a supervised internship are additionally required to take TESL 698 and TESL 699.

Please note that students will complete the required course work for ESL endorsement (see below) while they pursue their M.A. in Modern Languages with emphasis in TESL; however, once they complete the required course work, they must contact Dr. Whitney Webb at whitdt@olemiss.edu to apply for ESL endorsement.

Other Academic Requirements

Students must maintain a B average in their course work or be subjected to probation and/or expulsion from the program.
